Slut For Art

A collaboration between dancer Muna Tseng and choreographer Ping Chong, ‘Slut For Art’ is a memorial to Tseng’s late brother Kwong Chi, the 1980′s underground art scene and to all the people claimed by the AIDS virus. A combination of dance and photography the piece is performed by Tseng while images from artists like Timothy Greenfield-Sanders and Ann Magnuson flash behind her. The piece’s provocative title is taken from a badge Tseng’s brother (who worked with Keith Haring) wore in his acclaimed self-portrait series ‘East Meets West’.

Romeo and Juliet

Prokofiev meets Shakespeare, boy meets girl and drama meets dance in a piece created by Hungarian choreographer Laszlo Sergei and performed by the Hungarian National Ballet. Sergei says that Shakespeare’s love story, Prokofiev’s music and Zeffirelli’s film provided the inspiration for the piece. The dance is meant to adhere to the plot as closely as the medium of ballet allows. Fortunately, most people already know that the story is about two lovers trying to overcome the obstacle of a feud between their families.

MicroDiven

The recent switch from Thursday to Friday nights has had a noticeable affect on this glitzy get-together of gay women and their male friends. Held in the plushly furnished basement of the Kalkscheune Club in Mitte, the Friday night bash attracts far more people and often goes on until the last person has left – or collapsed. Equipped with lots of cosy corners and a small but seething dancefloor, Microdiven has something to suit every mood. Music this week comes courtesy of house DJs Miss Escalate and Miss 85B.

Giulio Cesare

Set in Egypt in 48BC, Handel’s ‘Giulio Cesare’ tells the tale of the period in Julius Caesar’s reign where he meets the seductive Cleopatra and her psychopathic brother Tolomeo. Handel is best known for his concertos and oratorios but operas were his passion. Here his gorgeous arias are performed by renowned counter-tenors David Daniels (Cesare) and Bejun Mehta (Tolomeo), with soprano and Operalia winner Elizabeth Futral as Cleopatra. The staging is directed by Francisco Negrin, with Harry Bicket making his company début conducting this production. In Italian with English supertitles.
