Lily Cai Chinese Dance Company

Among the many talented dancers and choreographers that reside in the Bay Area, Lily Cai may be one of the most adventurous. The former principal dancer from the Shanghai Opera formed her company here in 1998, melding ancient Chinese and modern dance forms. Cai’s most recent collaboration is ‘Strings Calligraphy’, an evening-length work of dance and multimedia set to music by the celebrated composer Gang Situ. The world première of the piece features music performed by the Alexander String Quartet and the new Century Chamber Orchestra.

Smuin Ballets/SF

Renowned choreographer Michael Smuin and his ensemble Smuin Ballets/SF launch their 7th anniversary season with a programme that includes the world première of the director’s newest work, ‘Sapphire Rain’. The new creations, which takes place in an abstract rain forest, is set to music by the well-known new age harpist Andreas Vollenweider. The performance is rounded out by two Smuin favourites, the expressionist ‘Medea’ and the sleek and sexy ‘Carmina Burana’, set to the emotionally charged music of Carl Orff.
