Brussels International Festival of Fantasy Film

Film premières normally lead corpulent cretins to squeeze themselves into tuxedos but it is measure of how unorthodox this festival is that it will begin with a body painting competition. After such a trashy entrée, the films on offer seem positively high-brow, featuring such celluloid milestones as ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Frankenstein’ and ‘Shark Skinman and the Peach Hip Girl’. There will also be a restrospective of works by off-beat Japanese director Shinya Tsukamoto, a ‘movie gimmick show’ with 3-D monsters and the ever-popular Vampires’ Ball.

Living Quarters by Brian Friel

Brian Friel’s ‘Living Quarters’ returns to the Dublin stage before embarking on a national tour. The play is set in a small town in Donegal in the late 1970s and brings together the members of the Butler family from the four corners of the world. Commandant Frank Butler returns from the Far East as a hero, but it is not only his family that are gathered to celebrate his return – all manner of mayhem arises as press and dignitaries descend on the small town to join in the celebrations. Not surprisingly, many secrets and lies are revealed as events unfold with extraordinary and tragic consequences.

Not For Sale: A Black and White Painting Exhibition

In an industrial monument, a group of artists from Greece, the Netherlands and Spain show title-less, price-less, black and white paintings in order to make a statement about the current art market. They’ve also produced a book called ‘Gaidaro on Tour – A European Story’. The exhibition will subsequently move on to Athens and Madrid.

Toyota Cup: Manchester United v Palmeiras

There must be two teams called Manchester United – on the one hand there’s a team that’s withdrawn from the English FA Cup due to being overstretched, while this lot, the current European champions, seem happy to jet halfway round the world in the middle of the season to play against the South American champions in a one-off match for the annual but largely meaningless Toyota Cup. Tickets sold out long ago, the appeal of Beckham and co being as great here as anywhere else.

Spike & Mike’s Sick & Twisted Festival of Animation

As surely as the students return to Boston’s dozens of colleges every autumn, the Coolidge Corner Theater welcomes them back with a run of Spike & Mike’s Sick & Twisted Festival of Animation. This year’s programme promises a number of premieres, including new ‘No Neck Joe’ shorts, a sequel to the stoner classic ‘Home Honey, I’m High’, and more gruesome shorts by Don Hertzfeldt.

How much is my boyfriend worth to me… about $30!

Lately my boyfriend and I have been taking each other on a regular date, using date ideas from a website I found – http://30dollardatenight.com. It’s fun fooling around like we’re 16 again… the site is great, it’s not like a restaurant directory (the usual couple date night) there’s date ideas that take you out of your comfort circle and try new things.
Over the past 3 weeks (now that the weather is warm) we’ve gone star gazing looking for constellations, I printed off a constellation map from the net – we found heaps! We went to the driving range for a hit of golf… personally I’ve never hit a golf ball before, this was my boyfriend’s date idea that he grabbed from the site (I wasn’t too keen on the idea – but once we were out there, we had a ball! No pun intended.)
And this week I took us on a dessert only date… it was unbelievable!!! You can only imagine the amount of dessert and coffee that can be had for $30!
There’s heaps of date ideas, its a must for couples who like doing date nights.

Luna Park

It’s Sunday nights which are the draw at this dinner club. Beth Lapides’ ‘Uncabaret’ has starred such Hollywood luminaries as Roseanne, Janeane Garofalo and Julia Sweeney, and provides a night of crude, foul-mouthed and very, very funny stand-up comedy. Luna Park also has three bars, two stages – one large, the other more intimate – and good American food. Located in West Hollywood’s club/bar district, this club is home to a variety of live performers – from rock to reggae – the rest of the week. Cover $3-$20, valet parking $3.50 weekdays, $5 weekends.
